John Gove: Okay, Let's Talk Eichel
- John Gove

John, I mentioned it on the other thread, but if Calgary truly is in the Eichel conversation & Treliving truly does grow huge kahunas & rolls the dice on this huge risk, the absolute maximum package going back to Buffalo in a take it or leave it would be: 1/2022 1st round pick (Treliving is hoping with Eichelhealthy & in the fold this can make the Flames a playoff team, so the pick is acceptable) 2/ Salary needs to balance & so does a centre going back. That would have to be Monahan, of which Buffalo could flip him easily for another 1st & + other decent asset. 3/ Valamaki who was was a 1st rounder NHL ready prospect 4/ Finally, Dube who is young & NHL proven already top 9.

Thats it, that would the most they are getting & personally that's an insane package for an injury risky player. Personally, we should be able to remove either Valamaki or Dube from that package & it should really be enough, but hey, seems like Adams wants 4 or 5 pieces which this provides. Flames have the cap space to easily handle this & get that 2nd pairing Dman & we need to cross our fingers Peletier or Zary & are ready for the prime time.

I believe he has an agreement with the Sabres medical staff on the how and when... Apparently there was a great disconnect on what needed to happen. No idea on anything specific.

Side note, (Borrowed from Flames Nation from an article in MAY):

On July 28, 2021, the 2021–22 league year will begin. Gaudreau’s contract features a modified no-trade clause in its final year, allowing the Flames to trade Gaudreau only to five teams of his choosing. If the Flames agreed to a deal with a team not on Gaudreau’s list, he would have to personally consent to the move and waive his no-trade clause to make it happen.

Right now that HAS to be dealt with or this team is F'd. Back to the Iggy situation where he handcuffed any trade possibility and a real return.

Tre has a day to figure poop out!

I don't know how you can say he's on track for a full recovery when they're still fighting about the surgery.

Sending Eichel to Calgary makes sense. Sabres need a top prospect like Valimaki but he is a LD and the Sabres have no need for that. I would propose Coronato, Pelletier, Monahan and a protected 1st (if top 10 moves to 2023).

From what I've been hearing (Elliott Friedman I know probably not reliable) he claimed to speak to Eichel's agent. Claimed that he thought Calgary was one of 3 teams most ingaged in talks with Buffalo along with Anaheim and Minnesota, and that Montreal and Rangers were not close at all.

Now Eichel still wants surgery, sure he is skating right now, but if he doesn't have surgery and just reagrivates it in 15 games he'll be out the remainder of the year. Letang had disc surgery in his neck and took 7 months to recover. I don't know if the surgery Eichel is after is less invasive with a quicker recovery time or not, but that could be a year of his contract wasted. Of course it would allow us to spend 10 mill over cap with him on ltir, and if he came back for the playoffs we could pull a Lightning and be loaded up for the playoffs since cap is a non issue at that point, Chicago did similar with Kane one year.

If the price is right I guess he would be a welcome addition, but who do you trade without completely dismantling the current talent we have in our system..

Oh the possibilities.

I think Tre does it.

Who does Buffalo have that can insulate the young guys coming up? Backlund might actually be a piece that could be in the deal. Monahan is not the guy you want taking on your tough matchups.

I don't think that's the way to go. Treliving must build a winning culture and move the problems out. No need for a superstar. We need 23 warriors who don't like to lose and who play as a group.

Thanks for the content John!

Wonder if JG will be a Flame at the end of the day.

The longer it takes for something to happen the more I worry Tre will get desperate and make a bad move.

Disagree. We've tried that route and it didn't work. Flames haven't had a true #1 centre since Joey. With so little happening in Flames land you got to think that Tre is working hard to get this done. Sutter has stated that they're a bubble team, I imagine they've been looking at how to improve the team.
McJohnny with Eichel and Tkachuk would be a true #1 line. Lindholm, Mangiapani is good pair to start a 2nd line with.
I'd be okay with Kevin R's trade, it's going to take a good offer to get him.

With Fluery out of Vegas look for them to press hard for Eichel. They can make the playoffs while Eichel recovers from surgery (ala Kucherov in Tampa) bring him in for the playoffs and win the cup.

While everyone’s focused on Eichel, the Flames need to sign Nick Ritchie.

Need some big guys to play with our shrimps.

You’d have to think that with the Fleury trade that Vegas would be the front runners.

Las Vegas has something like eight or nine centermen, including Nolan Patrick now.
Not sure if Eichel fits that well unless Vegas can move some of them to the wing positions.

Thanks John,

I think Buffalo's starting point will be Tkachuck. I don't know how I feel about that.

I doubt Buffalo has all that much interest in Tkachuk with his contract situation the way it is.

Monahan could be traded to the Senators, it's a perfect match. He played for the Ottawa 67s and is familiar with the city. He would become their # 1 center. In return, we get good quality prospects + picks and much needed cap space.
